The Houston Underwater Photographic Society (HUPS) is a not-for-profit organization formed to encourage interest and participation in underwater photography and videography. At its monthly meetings, HUPS provides educational and entertaining programs, a monthly photo contest, and a convivial atmosphere of shared interests and camaraderie.
Recent programs have included a broad range of "how to's" of underwater photography, narrated slide presentations, video shows, and various special events including photo workshops conducted by recognized experts in the field. HUPS also sponsors dive trips that are designed specifically to meet the special needs and interests of underwater photographers.
Monthly Meetings - HUPS meetings are free to guests. Each month we have a guest speaker and/or film presenter, news from HUPS' divemasters and officers on trips and other events, and a monthly photo contest based on selected subjects. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month at the Bayland CommunityCenter, 6400 Bissonnet Street, Houston, Texas. The doors open at 7:00PM for a brief but enjoyable social time, with the actual program ranging from 7:15 - 9:00PM.
Membership - Our membership consists of people from all walks of life, from young adults to seniors. The common thread is an interest in underwater photography and/or videography. One need not be a certified scuba diver to join the club, but must be a certified diver in order to participate as a diver on trips sponsored by HUPS. Annual membership dues are $35.00 for an individual and $45.00 for family memberships. HUPS provides a monthly newsletter to all members before each meeting, and an annual membership directory.
We encourage anyone interested to attend HUPS meetings, regardless of their photography skill level. Our members are happy to share knowledge and expertise, and can be most helpful in:
- Providing the necessary information on getting started in U/W photography
- Evaluating options and selecting the right equipmenthere to purchase U/W camera equipment
- Where to find the best travel spots for photography
- Improving your underwater photography technique ow to enter and succeed in photo competition.
Several of our members who started as novices have become professional underwater photographers.
