HUPS Workshops

Underwater Photography 101
April 3, 2010

Dennis Deavenport & Tom Collier will cover a wide range of subjects that are essential to
new UW photographers and also those photographers that are somewhat experienced but still may want to get a fresh perspective.

This workshop will be arranged in 4 sections:

1. A lecture with examples going over typical UW equipment options for SLR and Compact Digital users.

2. A PowerPoint presentation covering a wide range of skills required to take technically competent UW photographs.

3. A PowerPoint presentation geared to a better understanding of
compostion skills and how to capture images with lasting value.

4. Two separate hands-on sessions where people with SLRs and Compact Digital cameras can ask questions and be shown how to set up their gear properly.

Tom & Dennis will cover equipment-specific topics that relate to
everyone:

  • housings, strobes
  • auxiliary lights
  • arms
  • sync cords

AND more specifically to:

  • SLR cameras - (Dennis)
  • Compact Digital cameras -(Tom)

Attendees are encouraged to bring their UW gear so they can find out ways to set them up for typical UW situations such as:

  • Macro
  • Wide Angle
  • Night Diving
  • etc.
  • We will plan to have a 45-60 minute round-table help session after the lecture where the SLR attending members can ask questions and get help with Dennis and his assistants while the Compact Digital attending members will be assisted by Tom and his helpers.

General topics:

  • Equipment overview
  • Where to go & how to get there
  • What to bring and how to pack
  • Composition
  • Editing afterward
  • Software options
  • Do's and Don'ts of editing
  • Some brief before & after examples

Essential skills required to take technically successful images.

Things that will be covered include:

  • Typical types of UW photography (macro, wide angle, night diving, blue water, etc)
  • Essential diver skills
  • Setting up your gear
  • Camera settings for different subjects & settings
  • Handling your strobes
  • Making adjustments underwater

This workshop will cover a lot of ground so don't expect a lot of in-depth discussion of what is being presented.  Bring your gear and questions and be prepared for anything.  Copies of the presentation will be available to all attendees.

Any other questions please let me know.
