JULY 2005

July 11th Meeting - Taking Great Pictures with Toy Cameras - Ken Knezick

by Chuck Jensen
For our July 11th meeting we are in for a treat.  Ken Knezick is scheduled to give a program on getting great images with compact digital cameras.

Ken Knezick has shown continued success in the HUPS digital photo contests.  Yet he is not shooting with a fancy digital SLR camera.  Thus far, Ken's competition-winning photos have been produced with a somewhat outdated Olympus 4040 point and shoot digital camera.  Ken's July 11 program will identify ways for you to maximize your underwater photography success, while employing a relatively simple (and affordable) photo system.  You will learn what a point and shoot camera can and cannot do underwater.  You will learn how to work around the limitations of a simple digital system to capture specific kinds of shots.

Ken will offer suggestions on how to use the pre-set functions on your camera to get better results, and how to use simple manual control adjustments to bracket your shots and make better pictures.

In addition to being a founding member of HUPS, Ken is deeply involved with the diving industry and the local dive community.

He is the Executive Director of SEASPACE, and Owner of Island Dreams Travel (http://www.divetrip.com).  He has been photographing underwater more than 25 years and has logged more than 2800 dives.  Ken was awarded HUPS Digital photographer of the Year for 2003 and 2004.  Ken was recently named as recipient of the 2005 SEASPACE/ PADI Project AWARE Environmental Awareness Award.  Past recipients include Jean-Michel Cousteau and Dr. Sylvia Earle.  Many of Ken’s images can be found in the galleries section of his web site.

Come to HUPS on July 11 and learn how to be a better underwater photographer.  As usual, the meeting will be at the Bayland Community Center.  A map can be found on the back of this newsletter.  See you there!

June Meeting Recap -
Thanks Norbert

I would like to say thanks to all who were in attendance for our post-SEASPACE meeting and especially thanks to Norbert Wu.  It was a sensational meeting and presentation.  Those of you who missed it really missed out.  It was a great presentation on his Diving Under the Antarctic Ice.  Norb’s talent and love for nature really was impressive.  He shared his first hand experience under the Ice and Diving with the wildlife of that region.  His filmmaking is second to none!  He had some nice footage with the orcas, and the penguin stuff was unbelievable.  We are so fortunate to have the "Big Guns" entertain us year after year and this year was no exception.  Great Job, Norb, and we look forward to your next film adventure on your next visit.

President's Message
SEASPACE Retrospective

Right now I'm sitting here in the airport waiting for inspiration.  It always seems to be a problem for me to choose a topic that I think will be of interest to our members.  It's not so difficult this time since we just had another banner performance at SEASPACE.  The good thing about this is that so many of us were actively involved making the whole operation work smoothly and be a big success.

I say this not only from the perspective of HUPS but from the overall effort by all of the groups that are involved.  Lots of us work for more than one organization and have more than one hat to wear at this time of the year.  To name just a few HUPS members that worked hard getting SEASPACE up and off the ground I'd like to recognize John & Kathy Ringrose, Paul Levy, Pat Miller, Ross & Terry Whiteside, Anne & Dwight Coles and (of course) Ken Knezick.  Others like Chuck and Yvonne Jensen pulled duty at other booths, making the overall experience for visitors better and more complete.

Jack & Tammy Allyn and Joe Nicklo in front of the HUPS booth.

The point that I'm trying to emphasize here is that we're all part of the dive community here in the southeast Texas region, and to some extent we all sink or swim in the same waters.  In today's world, people have a tremendous number of activities to choose from and it is often difficult to maintain enough people's interest to keep things running smoothly.  SEASPACE is not immune to this any more than other activities.  The fact that it continues to be such an asset to the diving community is a tribute to the volunteers and underpaid staff that pour their energy and talent into it.  Gene and Sara Baugher aren't members of HUPS, but what would SEASPACE do without their ability to pull all the levers and push the right buttons?  Of course, HUC members handle the lion's share of the "on the floor" and "behind the scenes" jobs it takes to keep things moving along nicely, and we all owe them a debt of gratitude.  Without Greg & Jean Truax and a cadre of volunteers running the silent auction, a lot of young marine professionals wouldn't have scholarships to help them along the way to their educational goals.  Millie Morgan slaves away each year to organize the Environmental Awareness section of SEASPACE.  This is an essential part of the weekend since it allows organizations from around the area to show what they do and promote their activities.  HUPS falls into this category.

Frank and Joyce Burek with cameras in hand.

From the HUPS perspective, we managed once again to put an outstanding product on the floor for everyone attending SEASPACE to enjoy.  David Lenderman and his crew assembled an absolutely fantastic photo display with over 120 prints collected from our members.  Joyce and Frank Burek handled the thankless job of selecting and arranging the display with help from about 8-10 other people doing the hanging.  At times it looked a bit like a stirred-up ant-hill with everything going on.  Everybody seemed to be getting into the act including Jack & Tammy Allyn, George Freeman, Leonard Cichowski, Paul & Mary McDonald, Mary Lou Reid, Joe Nugent, Christa Loustalot, Henry Ragland, Paul Levy, John Anderson and a few others that escape me right now.  Getting the boards assembled and the lighting right on the boards was mostly done by David Lenderman, Joe Nicklo and Dennis Vernon.  Their collective efforts were well rewarded by an impressive tour de force of underwater images from around the world.  It's probably not a stretch to say that the photo display was better attended than just about any other display at SEASPACE.

Getting the booth up and running was Joe Nicklo's specific task although he seemed to be everywhere doing whatever needed to be done.  There's a good reason Joe was asked to handle the booth.  He just knows how to get things done properly.  The stalwart group of volunteers manning the booth were all coached by Joe on how to pitch HUPS to prospective members and how to sell raffle tickets in mass quantities.  And sell, they did.  We managed to put a lot of dollars in the bank again this year.  Perhaps the best part of the raffle is how much fun everyone seems to have selling and buying chances in the Saturday and Sunday drawings.  Saturday's drawing went to Faye Cutsinger, a local Houston diver who selected one of Jackie Reid's prints.  On Sunday, one of our own, Gary Sweringen, managed to get the luck-of-the-draw.  When Gary also selected one of Jackie's prints, a pair of mating Mandarinfish, the sweep was complete.

Joe Nugent helping out with the gallery set up.

Back at the booth, we had set up the digital projector where some of our past presentations were shown for visitors to view.  We also used this setup to do some mini-workshops on how to edit images with Photoshop CS2 and put slideshows together with ProShow Gold.  Attendance at my mini-workshops was. . . moderate but enthusiastic.

Saturday evening at SEASPACE is always reserved for the film festival.  This year, HUPS was once again asked to prepare a short presentation for the audience.  Christa Loustalot, James Wiseman and I were selected to head up this effort.  However, the lion's share of the work and most of the inspiration were provided by Christa.  Using winning images from our monthly contests, shootouts, and donated images from members, she was able to assemble an exciting 9+ minute presentation complete with some funky music that fit the mood perfectly.  We received many compliments afterward, a tribute to the quality of the images, advice & critiques by James, my cheerleading, and Christa's skills.

All in all, we had another great year at SEASPACE.  We made some money to replace what we spent this year on projectors, a bunch of new members were signed up to help lead us into the future, and everyone had a lot of fun doing it.  There is no doubt that HUPS efforts at SEASPACE over the last several years have made a large impact on the quality, beauty, and interest for all participants and visitors.

Don't forget that the next meeting will be held after the 4th of July holiday.  See you at 7 pm on July 11th for Ken Knezick's presentation.

Check It Out on the Web

Mitsui./MAM claims to offer the highest quality and most durable recordable media available.  With everyone saving their digital images on CDs and DVDs it’s a topic we all need to learn more about.  The link was submitted by Jesse Cancelmo: http://www.mitsuicdr.com/products/dvd/index.html.  Jesse said that he has heard good things about these DVDs from fellow American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) members.  The site contains some interesting information on how DVDs are manufactured and their weak points.  This page is particularly interesting: http://www.mitsuicdr.com/technology/technical_papers/documents/bonding.htm.

Photoshop CS2 Book

Submitted by Mary Lou Reid
There are a lot of instructional books out there for Photoshop and it’s hard to decide which one is best.  I recently purchased "The Photoshop CS2 Book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby.  I can highly recommend the book.  I have the previous edition for Photoshop CS and this one provides detailed information about the upgraded CS2 product.  It’s very easy to follow and provides step by step instruction.  It also includes a whole chapter on processing RAW images.  I purchased the book from Amazon for around $26 (free shipping).

Christmas in Bonaire?

Starting in December, Continental Airlines will start weekly flights between Houston and Bonaire.  Bonaire has long been a favorite dive destination but it has been challenging to get there from Houston.  These new direct flights should get you thinking about future dive trips.  For more information on the new flight schedule, check out this web page.

What’s Your Problem?

The best way to improve your underwater photography is to determine you main problem area(s).  Be your own harshest critic.  Don’t just toss or delete your bad images.  Take time to analyze what went wrong on your throw aways.  These less than perfect images are the ones to lead you to salvation.  Throughly evaluate these images to determine what went wrong.  Are your main problems related to exposure, composition, focus, subject selections or a combination of some or all of the things?  Once you determine your main faults you can take steps to improve.

If you need exposure and/or focus help, some practice time in the pool will go a long way.  Learn what distances and strobe power combinations produce pleasing results.

If you are having composition issues there are tons of books to help you.  You can read books on composition or even better look at photographic art books.  These can be underwater or topside photos.  Just observe how the common rules of composition are applied in the photos you like.

Determine where your main problems lie and then take steps to improve in those areas.  If you need help just speak up at an upcoming HUPS meeting and you will find plenty of help.

New Passport Requirements

This article was taken from Island Dreams electronic Newsletter, Island Dreamer July 2005 issue.  The entire newsletter can be found here: http://www.divetrip.com/idreamer.htm.

The U.S. Department of State has announced some major changes to international travel documentation requirements for U.S. citizens.  The most critical aspects are as follows:

1) After December 31, 2005, all U.S. citizens returning to the USA from international travel (except Mexico or Canada) will require a valid passport.  The passport must be valid for a minimum of six (6) months after the traveler's return date to the USA.

2) After December 31, 2006, U.S. citizens traveling to Canada and Mexico will also require a passport.  Again, the passport must remain valid for a minimum of six (6) months after the traveler's return date to the USA.

3) This represents a major change of policy.  In particular, it will impact travelers to the Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, where previously a passport had not been required.

Note from Ken Knezick: A United States Passport is one of the most valuable items you may ever own.  As a result of these changes, a wave of new passport applications may be expected to begin shortly.  If you do not already hold a valid U.S. Passport, you are encouraged to apply now, and avoid the delays that will follow.  Likewise, if your passport will expire within the next 12 months, you would be wise to process your renewal now.  The link below will provide you with the appropriate forms and details of the application and renewal processes.

Bureks Honored in Washington D.C.

Frank Burek, Dan Basta, Joyce Burek

HUPS members Joyce and Frank Burek were recently recognized by the Flower Gardens Banks National Marine Sanctuary as the sanctuary’s Outstanding Volunteer Service Award winners.  To receive this award they were flown to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation 2005 Leadership Awards Dinner on June 8th.

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation each year recognizes individuals who have contributed to helping to preserve our marine and freshwater resources.  They awarded Leadership awards to Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Congressman Vernon Ehlers and Wayne Gilcrest and a Lifetime Achievement Award to the Honorable Lowell Weicker.

They also recognize volunteers that have been nominated by each of the 13 Marine Sanctuaries and 2 Marine Preserves with the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award.  One of these volunteers is also awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award.  This year the winner was Mr. Kimokeo Kapahulehua from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

Presenting the awards were members of the Board of Trustees of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation; Jean-Michel Cousteau, Dr. Sylvia Earle and Bob Talbot.

During dinner, images from each of the sanctuaries were projected on a giant screen.  Many of the Burek’s underwater images from the Flower Garden Banks were shown.  For more information on the sanctuary check out http://flowergarden.noaa.gov/about/welcome.html.

Quick Tip

Give me some space!  When shooting slides I always shot for slide shows.  This means I framed my subjects to maximize the impact of the projected slide.  To do this I usually filled the entire slide with subject.  This sometimes caused problems when making prints from slides.  Slides do not match the height / width ratio of the common print sizes.  So sometimes the cropping of slide images resulted in chopping off meaningful portions of the subject.  Now that I am shooting digital, I have discovered that I need to leave a little more room around my subject to allow for cropping.  This lets me optimize the image crop and dimensions for it’s intended use.

Travel Tip

While traveling recently I had an allen wrench confiscated from my carry-on bag by TSA personnel.

I know better that to pack anything like a screwdriver in my carry-on bag.  I never dreamed that a little allen wrench posed a threat to air security.  Guess I was wrong.  I was told by the TSA inspector that anything considered a tool is not allowed as a carry on item.  So, don’t pack any type of "tool" in your carry on bag.

If you have a tip to share with other HUPS members please send it to David Lenderman.
