To get the New Year off with a bang Jackie Reid has put together a great program. Jackie is surely one of HUPS most talented members. Along with numerous national and international competitions Jackie has won HUPS Advanced Photographer of the Year more times than we can count. Jackie will present two programs. The first will be a music synced show of his recent (November) trip to Wakatobi. This is a dream destination for any serious underwater photographer. Located in southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, Wakatobi offers some of the world’s most healthy and diverse coral reefs. The beach dive in front of the resort is considered by many to be the best beach dive in the world. Jackie traveled to Wakatobi in November with Ken Knezick and several other HUPS members. For those that have not been to Wakatobi you really need to see what this place has to offer. For those that have made the journey, come see Wakatobi through Jackie’s talented eyes. The second program will be a short discussion on how Jackie captures his beautiful images. He will discuss camera gear, settings, strobe placement, film and whatever else members want to know.

Jackie Reid So, to get the year started we have one of our most talented members taking us to one of the world’s best dive destinations. If that weren’t enough, Jackie is then going to tell us how he gets those great shots. What more could we ask for? As usual the meeting will be at the Bayland Community Center starting at 7:00 PM. A map and directions are at the end of this newsletter.
New Digital Photo ContestThe new digital photo contest starts officially at the January meeting. In 2003 HUPS will have digital contests at the January, April, July and October meetings. Topics for these contests can be found on page 5 of this newsletter. A digital category will also be offered at the December’s Best of HUPS contest. At the end of the year we will name a Digital Photographer of the Year. See complete digital contest rules on page 3 or here.

President's Message2003 has arrived and we are off and running. There are tons of exciting things happening this year. I guess the number one new item for HUPS is the new digital photo contest. This will bring HUPS to the leading edge of UW photography. This contest will start out four times a year and as demand/participation increases we will increase the frequency of contests. The complete rules are on page 3 of this newsletter. The contest topics for the 2003 slide and digital contests are finalized and are on page 5 of this newsletter and on the HUPS web site. Participating in the contest is a lot of fun. Take a look at the list and start thinking about the images you will be entering in the upcoming contests. I have said it a hundred times, you can’t win if you don’t enter. I would really like to see participation from those of you who have never entered our contests. Just do it! Dennis is hard at work setting up programs for 2003. He has about half the programs nailed down. This leaves several meetings open for suggestions or volunteers. Are there any subjects you want to learn more about? Let us know. Dennis can be reached at rodangallery@cs.com. SEASPACE 2003 is now less than 6 months away. We have a ton to do between now and June 6-8. We have to put together a show for the film festival and build up an image gallery. I hope to really get the ball rolling at the January Board of Directors meeting. If you want to get involved with the film festival show or the gallery we are always looking for volunteers. I have a short list of individuals who have volunteered to help. If you want to be added to the list contact me at underh2o@mail.ev1.net or talk to me at the meeting. We will soon be asking for contributions of images. We will especially be in need of prints to hang in the gallery. SEASPACE 2003 will offer an incredible opportunity to promote HUPS. See You January 6th,
TGCC Awards BanquetThe TGCC Annual Awards Banquet is scheduled for 6:00 PM Saturday February 1st at the Monument Inn. Christmas Party a Jolly Good TimeThe December meeting/Christmas Party was a lot of fun. We all gathered around the table to eat the traditional Holiday dishes. Just like dinner with the extended family except your annoying brother-in-law wasn’t there. Oh, and your family gatherings most likely don’t include an after dinner photo contest. During the Best of HUPS 2002 contest there were lots of oohs and aahs. I am not sure if they liked the slides or that they ate too much. Either way there were many nice images to admire. The hard part was deciding which ones deserved our votes. Big thanks to John and Kathy Ringrose for their hard work coordinating the event and dressing up the meeting room.
Knezick Achieves Platinum Pro 5000 StatusAs part of the festivities at DEMA 2002, HUPS’ own Kenneth D. Knezick was among 50 divers inducted into the Scuba Schools International (SSI) Platinum Pro 5000 Society. Founded in 1992, and dubbed “the world’s most elite water explorers,” Platinum Pro 5000 is comprised of a select group of 1300 scuba diving professionals from 40 countries around the world. Knezick was added to this august list of diving industry professionals as a result of his own 25 years of service to the sport of scuba diving. Serving for two decades as a NAUI Divemaster, Ken has been responsible for safely conducting many thousands of dives for hundreds of sport divers. He has worked with the SEASPACE Exposition since 1981, and from 1987 to the present has served as SEASPACE’s Executive Director. Ken is also a founding member of the Gulf Reef Environmental Action Team (GREAT), and is owner and President of Houston-based Island Dreams Travel. Please join in congratulating Ken Knezick on this achievement, which he hopes reflects well on the entire Houston and Texas diving communities. Pat Miller – 2002 Member of the YearSeveral members took the time to submit letters nominating Pat for his hard work in 2002. Pat has been the HUPS Webmaster for the last several years. He is the one person responsible for getting HUPS on the World Wide Web. In addition to being the Webmaster Pat has contributed to HUPS in other ways. He headed up the HUPS booth for SEASPACE 2002, has given programs for HUPS and participated in the monthly contests. Unfortunately, Pat and wife Kathy have recently relocated to the Austin area. Even with the relocation Pat has volunteered to keep up his membership and Webmaster duties. Send congrats and thanks to Pat at webmaster@hups.org.

Professional Printing for Digital Images
Last month’s column discussed some technical aspects of how to prepare your digital images for printing. It also offered two options for making high quality prints: home inkjet printing and professional printing at a photo lab. After some experimentation with large format printing of "gift prints" for the holidays, I have prepared a short "how-to" column about preparing and printing your images on the high-end Fuji Frontier. For the past year or two, it has been possible to bring a CD of your photos to a lab for a technician to crop, color correct, and print. Unfortunately, this is costly, and depends on the judgment of the photo technician to crop correctly and render a "correct looking" underwater photograph. As many of us know, prints made this way often need to go back to the printer to correct the color to more natural tones as only us divers know what we saw under the waves. This trial and error repetition can quickly drive up costs and can take a long time. Fortunately, a new leap forward in technology now allows photographers to take control of their professional prints. A computer interface called a "photo-kiosk" can now be found in many of the larger photo labs. This device - made by either Kodak or Fuji depending on location - is directly tied-in to the Fuji Frontier photo lab behind the counter. The photo-kiosk resembles a large computer with a touch screen and various disk-drives. The machine I used recently could read photos from: CD-ROM, Compact Flash, Smart Media, Memory Stick, SD Cards, and even the old PCMCIA flash media. The machine reads the photos from the media, and allows the photographer to select images to print, crop them for 8 x 10, color correct them, if necessary, and then send them to the photo lab behind the counter. The machine takes your name, and then prints out a receipt for you to take to the cashier for payment. Depending on the size of the job, you can wait around to pick up the prints, or come back the next day to pick them up. Perhaps the best part of this process is that you only pay for the prints when you pick them up, and the cost is incredibly reasonable. A 4 x 6 costs the same or less than a 35mm film print and an 8 x 10 is considerably less. The results are stunning and literally cannot be told apart from film prints. They are also printed on Fuji Crystal-Archive paper to last a lifetime. I’d like to present a few of my recent "lessons learned" from printing 8 x 12’s on the Fuji Frontier. The printer produces 300 DPI output. This means that a 2 megapixel camera will produce best results at 4 x 6, a 3 megapixel camera at 5 x 7, and a 6 megapixel camera can do 8 x 10 or perhaps 8 x 12 without ANY recognizable digital artifacts.

Professional Printing Using 12 megapixel images or programs such as Photoshop or Genuine Fractals makes beautiful prints up to 20 x 30 possible. For truly professional results, embed the profile for the Fuji Frontier into your image for exact perfect color rendition. In a pinch, the sRGB profile used by the the Fuji S2pro camera is similar and yields good results. The photo-kiosk gives you the option or printing all of the images on your card, or selecting images one by one to print. The quickest and easiest thing to do is just print all of them at 4 x 6. If you are more selective, you can pick individual images and even print each image at multiple sizes. A few additional features are available for having a little fun with your photos. You can elect to pick an image and make personalized greeting cards,or you can select 12 images, and even print calendars. Believe it or not the most economical place to print is at the larger Walmarts or at Sam’s Club. You should easily be able to find a location near you. I go to the Walmart on I-45 North at West Road. I can drop my disk off after work and pick up my prints the next day at lunch. As SEASPACE approaches and our club prepares our show, I’d like to encourage our digital shooters to experiment with printing at the photo-kiosk. Not only can we put on a great slideshow, but we can prepare large format prints to show right alongside our Velvia shooters. It will only take a moment to see the potential of these wonderful new machines – both the digital camera as a photo tool, and the digital printer as a means to show off our work. If you have any questions, or would like to see some prints, make sure to talk to me at our next HUPS meeting.
The Fuji Aladdin and the Kodak photo kiosk offer digital photo printing opportunities at many locations. The Fuji Aladdin can read from literally any digital media. The Kodak kiosk is older and does not support as many types of digital media. The author recommends using CD-ROM with this unit. |
